Farm Background

Sixty acres of land was purchased in this part of West Cavan in 1988 and a couple of years later the pure-bred herd was started with the purchase of three PBR AA heifers from Bernie Faughnan of Mohill. At its most intensive there were 24 Suckler Cows. This plateaued to about 16 and with increasing land extensification this is now down to 12. Most animals are sold farm to farm by private treaty. Though not officially organic the farm is practically of that status. At most one or two tons of nitrate fertilisers would be sown each spring/summer and cattle are only dosed for disease or else for worm and tetanus prophylaxis. Cattle are housed in cubicles along with straw or rushes once the land is too wet to carry them without becoming poached. There are no slats or slurry and the herd has been brucellosis and TB free throughout this period.
